After eighteen months of research, we are releasing Belonging Without Barriers – Recognising and Addressing Racism and Discrimination in Germany's Outdoors, the first study on this topic in Germany.
The report shares the experiences of people of colour in nature spaces, based on insights from 213 people of colour and 100 white people invited from the general population in Germany, and 22 outdoor advisors and changemakers. It reveals barriers caused by prejudice and discrimination, and highlights what must change.
“There are plenty of people of colour interested in and active in the outdoors, but the industry doesn’t see or reflect that. Representation is the easiest place to start — we must at least do that!”

Why it mattersNature should be for everyone. Yet, biased perceptions, lack of representation, and structural barriers often prevent people of colour from feeling safe and welcome outdoors. With anti-migrant politics rising in Germany, taking a clear anti-racist stance is more urgent than ever.
WHAT NEEDS TO CHANGE- Authentic representation in media and marketing
- Diversity in leadership, hiring, and workplace culture
- Anti-racist training across the sector
